New York City Lump Error Lawyer

Lumps in the breast are very concerning for any woman who finds one. Fortunately, many times these are non-cancerous and of little concern to patients. However, there are times when they are a symptom of a very serious disease and in these cases, they must be taken very seriously. The appropriate tests must be ordered and interpreted correctly so patients can be informed of the results and start receiving the treatment they may need. Unfortunately, this does not always happen. Below, our New York City lump error lawyer outlines some of the most common mistakes that occur, and how to get the help you need if you have suffered harm.

Not Ordering the Proper Tests

Mammograms can detect lumps in the breast tissue, as well as other issues. Women should receive them as part of regular medical care between the ages of 45 to 55 to ensure they are healthy and that there are no potentially dangerous lumps. If a mammogram does detect a lump, a biopsy may need to be taken to determine if it is malignant or benign. Doctors should understand when a regular patient needs a routine mammogram, or when a woman may need this type of test if they are experiencing pain or other issues. Likewise, they should also know when to take a biopsy of the lump.

Misinterpretation of Test Results

Just as tests such as mammograms and biopsies must be ordered and performed, the test results must be accurately interpreted. Radiologists must have the knowledge, skill, and training to accurately interpret if a mammogram shows a lump or difference in the tissue. Pathologists must also be able to examine marked cells in a lump to make a diagnosis. If either of these medical professionals fail to do their job properly, patients can suffer serious harm.

Testing Issues

Proper ordering and an adequate interpretation of the tests do not really matter if there is a problem with the actual test. For example, a woman with a lump in her breast may have a biopsy to determine if the cells are cancerous. If the surgeon, radiologist, or other medical professional took a sample from the wrong location, though, the tests may come back as normal. This can result in a failure to diagnose, which could result in great harm to the woman. If the lump was cancerous, the results would not show it because it was never biopsied.

Delay in Test Results

Patients need test results back right away, particularly if a lump is cancerous. Early treatment is necessary to give the patient the best chance of beating the disease. If test results are delayed, patients cannot receive the treatment they need and this can be catastrophic.
