New York City Police Brutality Lawyer

Kenneth Chamberlain, a retired correction officer, was killed by police in his home last November 19 after his medical alert device was accidentally set off. After forcing their way into his home, police officers shot and killed Chamberlain after shooting him with a stun gun and bean bags. Their claim was that the former Marine and corrections officer had attacked them with a hatchet and a knife. Though the 68-year-old had slightly over the legal limit of alcohol in his bloodstream, the autopsy revealed that he had his arms at his sides at the time he was shot. Incidentally, the officer responsible, Anthony Carelli, is also being brought up on federal police brutality charges for a 2008 incident.

The textbook definition of police brutality is the intentional use of excessive force, usually physical force, by a police officer, sheriff, prison officer, or other law enforcement official. Verbal attacks and psychological intimidation by a police officer or law enforcement official fall under this category as well. Over a decade spanning from the late 1980’s to the late 1990’s, Amnesty International collected information on over 90 cases of alleged ill treatment or excessive force by New York City police officers. Reported injuries included cases where victims were struck by an officer’s fist or baton, generally after minor disputes with officers on the street.
