Crane Hazard On Clear Display In Queens

Crane

Of all the various hazards at an average New York construction site, cranes pose some of the most serious dangers. These towering pieces of machinery not only pose a risk to construction workers, but also innocent people who just happen to be walking by. The clear danger posed by cranes in New York was on display after a crane started to lean to one side in Queens, eventually teetering perilously against a building.

If you have been harmed by a construction accident in New York, you are fully within your rights to take legal action. Team up with a qualified, experienced personal injury attorney, and you can file a personal injury claim. This not only allows you to hold negligent parties accountable in a court of law, but it also allows you to receive compensation for your medical expenses, lost  wages, psychological trauma, and much more.

Worrying Crane Accident in Queens

On July 2nd of 2021, it was reported that a crane had toppled over onto its side in Queens. This worrying incident required the adjacent building to be completely evacuated, and it raised questions about the safety standard in New York. These questions are anything but new, as there have been many accidents in the past in the city. However, accidents involving cranes are especially worrying, as these incidents have the potential to harm a large number of people – some of whom may be far from the construction site when the crane topples over.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries after this particular crane accident in Queens. However, it could have easily been much worse. One office worker reported that he heard a loud crashing sound before getting up to investigate. Upon looking out of the window, he realized that there was a crane leaning against his building.

Immediately, the DOB and OSHA launched an official investigation into the root cause of the accident, although no details have emerged.

Why Are Cranes so Dangerous?

Cranes can be dangerous for a number of different reasons, including:

  • Electrical Hazards: 50% of all crane accidents are the result of machinery coming into contact and a power source. Electrical companies are often asked to de-energize power lines that are too close to the crane.
  • Overloading: Many crane accidents are also caused when the maximum load capacity of a crane is exceeded. This often occurs when loads are dragged, sudden dropping or swinging, or faulty components.
  • Falling Materials: When cranes accidentally drop materials, it can cause devastating consequences for the people below.
