City Worker Crushed to Death at Sewage Plant in Brooklyn

A New York City wastewater treatment plant worker was killed when a conveyor belt collapsed and crushed him on Friday.

Tragedy struck a Brooklyn, New York wastewater treatment plant on Friday morning, January 9, 2009, when a temporary conveyor belt collapsed and crushed an employee to death. The employee, Gennaro Montello, had been a Department of Environmental Protection employee since 2001. He was 45 years old. The conveyor belt was being moved by other workers at the Owl’s Head Wastewater Treatment Plant in the Bay Bridge section of Brooklyn. As a handful of other workers were moving the conveyor belt, it buckled in the middle and collapsed. Montello was transported to Lutheran Medical Center where he passed away shortly before noon.

The Public Employee Safety and Health Bureau is investigation the accident. They are a division of the state’s Department of Labor. They will be investigating whether or not there were flaws in the construction of the conveyor belt that could have led to its collapse.
