Family of Connecticut Man who Died at Hands of Doctor Malpractice Awarded $5.5 million by Jury

News of a Stamford, Connecticut jury’s decision to award the grieving family of a man who died due to the medical malpractice of his doctors spread across the internet this week. According to the Stamford Advocate, a local Connecticut news source, Felix Mejia’s family was awarded $5.5 million by the Stamford jury in the medical malpractice lawsuit brought after he tragically died due to the negligent medical care that he received from the doctors he trusted. Reports indicate that Mr. Mejia, a 69-year-old Stamford man, went to the Stamford Hospital on September 18, 2018, complaining of symptoms of abdominal cramping and diarrhea that had been ongoing for three weeks. He was treated by Stamford Hospital staff members Dr. Ryosuke Ito and physician’s assistant Vanie Mangal, who were employed by Emergency Medicine Physicians of New Haven County, LLC, and who worked at the Stamford Hospital. Mr. Mejia was told at his first visit to the hospital that he was suffering from a bout of “traveler’s diarrhea” and he was sent home the same day after he underwent some tests. However, Mr. Mejia’s condition did not improve, and, in fact, worsened, and he returned to the hospital two additional times within the six days after his initial visit. On September 27, 2018, his final trip to the Stamford Hospital, Mr. Mejia was finally diagnosed with “severe chronic mesenteric ischemia”, which is a condition in which intestinal arteries become blocked. Mr. Mejia was scheduled for surgery, but tragically passed away as a result of a heart attack during initial emergency exploratory surgery.

The medical malpractice lawsuit filed on behalf of certain members of Mr. Mejia’s family alleged that Stamford Hospital “failed to properly examine, test, monitor, diagnose and render appropriate treatment” to Mr. Mejia, which ultimately caused his untimely death.

Mr. Mejia had come to the United States from Medellin, Columbia, “in search of a better life.” Lawyers for Mr. Mejia’s family said of the jury result, “We are extremely happy for our clients and that their belief that Mr. Mejia should not have been sent home and should not have passed away as a result of being sent home has been unanimously validated by the jury”.
