I will never forget that night….
My girlfriend and I had been having an argument about my returning her car late. At one point, she slapped me in the face, and when I tried to hold my hands up in defense, I accidentally pushed her back, causing her to trip and fall. Everything happened so fast after that. Suddenly, I was lifted up by two men from behind and thrown on the ground. Someone handcuffed my hands behind my back. While I was still lying faced down, one of the two guys got down in front of me and started wailing on me, slamming his fists into my face, again and again. My girlfriend was screaming, and I could feel blood running down my face. It was dark, so I couldn’t see much, but I could make out one thing: a shinny NYPD badge staring down at me from my attacker’s shirt. He was a cop.
That was the worst night of my life. My face disfigured with a broken nose that felt like it was on the other side of my face, I didn’t even look like the same person. My case was eventually settled before trial, and I received a generous damages package which covered my past and future medical costs, my out of pocket expenses for having to hire a criminal defense lawyer, and compensation for my past and future pain and suffering. The best reward of all, however, was that I felt I got justice out of my case, a peace of mind which will continue to give me the courage and strength to heal.
