E. Coli Poisoning Symptoms

Escherichia coli (commonly known as E. coli) has made headlines frequently with its recent breakouts in grocery-store-bought spinach and at Taco Bell restaurants in the Northeast United States. This bacteria has many strains, most of which are not harmful, but some which can cause serious health problems. The specific strain that has made news is the E. coli O157:H7 strain, and it is found mostly in the intestines of healthy cattle, deer, goats, and sheep.

E. coli O157:H7 was first recognized as a cause of illness in 1982 during an outbreak of severe bloody diarrhea. This outbreak was traced to contaminated hamburgers. Since then, more infections in the United States have been caused by eating undercooked ground beef than by any other food. E. coli O157:H7 has caused illness and major disease outbreaks in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates 73,000 cases of infection and 61 deaths occur from E. coli O157:H7 in this country every year.

The most recent case of an E. coli breakout happened at a number of Taco Bell restaurants throughout the Northeast United States. States reporting probable cases associated with the outbreak were: New Jersey (20); New York (15); Pennsylvania (7); and Delaware (1). Due to these outbreaks, thirty five individuals have been hospitalized for an E Coli poisoning symptom, three of them with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

HUS can provoke serious medical complications. It is a disease primarily of infancy and early childhood, but can also occur due to exposure to E. coli. HUS’s most common precipitating factors include diarrhea and upper respiratory infections, and it is the most common cause of acute renal failure in children.
