13 Injured in Bronx Bus Accident after New York City MTA Bus Crashes into Subway Station Pillar
There is no doubt that using New York City’s public transit system, including New York City buses, is a cost-effective, efficient, and convenient way for many New York City residents to navigate the city on their way to work, school, to run errands, or when they are just out for the day. Indeed, the network of New York City buses is impressive, serving numerous passengers every day, often without incident. The truth of the matter is, however, that even when a bus is operated by a city employee, bus drivers are humans and humans can make mistakes that lead to serious and even fatal bus accidents. A very serious bus accident involving a New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) bus that happened earlier this year in the Bronx in August demonstrates this very point.
According to national news reports, in early August of this year, an MTA bus collided with a subway station pillar in the Bronx while transporting commuters and other passengers. The accident occurred on Jerome Avenue in the Bronx, and, as it was a hot summer day, pedestrians and other people were out walking and working in the sunny weather on the street. Although at the time of reports it was unclear exactly what happened that caused the accident, investigators believed that the bus driver had failed to navigate the roadway correctly, and lost control, causing the bus to run into the subway pillar. A total of 13 people, including the driver of the MTA bus, were injured in the bus accident. An onlooker who saw the bus accident in progress said of the accident, “I’ve been living here for 25 years and this is the first time I ever [sic] seen this. I usually take the bus from Fordham to here, and 99% of the time it’s safe.” MTA said at the time of the accident, “The incident is under review and the bus operator is being withheld from duty pending a complete investigation.”
