New York Erbs Palsy Lawyer
Erb's palsy is a mechanical injury that results when the brachial plexus nerves are stretched or torn by the obstetrician's use of excessive force during delivery, causing either partial or total paralysis of the baby's arm. The brachial plexus nerves connect muscles in the shoulder, arms and hands to the spinal cord. Should the brachial plexus nerves be damaged during delivery, it can lead to limpness or complete or partial paralysis of any or all of the muscles of the arm, shoulder and hand, as well as lack of muscle control in the arm, shoulder or hand, and/or lack of feeling or sensation in those muscles.

- Avulsion, the most severe type of brachial plexus injury, occurs when the nerve is torn from the spine.
- Rupture is when the nerve is torn, but not at the spinal attachment.
- Neuroma is when the nerve has tried to heal itself, but scar tissue formed around the injury, placing pressure on the injured nerve and preventing it from conducting signals to the muscles.
- Neuropraxia (stretch), the most common type of brachial plexus injury, occurs when the nerve is damaged but not torn.
