According to recent surveys from the U.S. Department of Transportation, nearly 800 bicycle riders are killed annually, and almost ¾ of those deaths involve some type of head injury. Child bike accidents among children are caused by
a number of factors. Depending on your child’s age,
he or she may want to play recklessly on a bike-doubling
up with a friend on one bike or doing fancy maneuvers
that could result in a tragedy. Children who ride
bicycles with a Walkman put themselves at a high risk
for collisions by blocking their ability to hear and
react quickly to oncoming cars, other bikes and pedestrians.
They need to be aware at all times and not distracted
by music. Still other times, defective bicycles are
to blame. Anything that will cause a child to lose
control of their bike is a major contributing factor
to children’s bicycle accidents; failing breaks, loose
pedals or broken gears. A simple slip of the hand
or loss of grip can cause major damage depending on
the speed that they are traveling and the surface
that they fall onto. Kids are often easily distracted,
but not paying attention is a major “no-no” for
kids on a bike. 75 % of child bike-accident deaths
occur where driveways, alleys and streets intersect,
so remind them to pay attention at these key intersections
before ever sending them off alone.
There are some preventative measures you can take to reduce the risk of your child being involved in a bicycle
accident. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you enforce the following ten guidelines with your children.
Have them:
- Avoid bicycle stunts and tricks.
- Stop and look for traffic at all intersections.
- Wear a certified protective helmet and/or
protective gear for elbows and knees.
- Ride single-file on
the right side of the road, with the flow of traffic.
- Refrain from riding at night.
- Obey all traffic signals and stop signs,
especially waiting for a green light.
- Stay off high-traffic
streets, and wear bright colored clothing or reflective
stickers.
- Ride in a straight line near the shoulder
or curb.
- Always try to ride with a buddy, but never
ride double on one bike.
- Never ride a borrowed
bike-it’s unpredictable and may not fit them properly.
