Evra Patch Side Effects
Our Ortho Evra contraceptive
patch injury law firm was
one of the first law firms
in the country to represent
clients in connection with
serious and permanent injuries
they sustained as a result
of using the contraceptive
patch. We also appeared on
ABC's Primetime Live with
Chris Cuomo in October of
2004 as part of their groundbreaking
story investigating the deaths
and side effects caused by
the patch.

We were interviewed because
we represent the father of
Zakiya Kennedy, an 18-year-old
Manhattan fashion student
who collapsed and died in
a New York City subway station
in 2004. See
newspaper articles We
also represent the husband
of Sasha Webber, a 25-year-old
mother of two young children
who died while using the
patch. See
newspaper articles We
discovered as early as March
of 2004 that a medical examiner
reviewing the manufacturer's
application for the FDA raised
serious concerns that the
risks associated with the
patch were substantially
greater than those of the
oral contraceptive pill.
In November, 2005, the FDA
finally required the manufacturers
to issue a black box warning
label for its contraceptive
patch. We are proud that
we were one of the first
Law firms to spearhead the
efforts to inform the public
about the potential deadly
side effects of this product.
We can help you with your

The patch was first introduced
on the U.S. market in November
of 2001. The device is a
small beige hormonal patch
that is worn on the skin
to prevent pregnancy. The
patch is worn for one week
and then replaced on the
same day of the week for
three consecutive weeks,
with the fourth week "patch-free." The
patch works by delivering
continuous levels of norelgestomin
and ethinyl estradiol (progestin
and estrogen, respectively)
through the skin and into
the bloodstream. The product
is made by Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical,
Inc., a division of Johnson & Johnson.
Ortho-McNeil promotes the
patch as an easier alternative
to the birth control pill
because it combines the efficacy
of the pill with once-a-week
dosing, and it supposedly
is "on your body, off your
mind."

On July 17, 2005, the Associated Press See
AP newspaper article ran a story about several
people who experienced serious injuries or who died
from using the contraceptive patch. According to the
article, the risk of dying or suffering a blood clot
while using the patch is three times as high as the
risk in women taking the pill. The AP found that before
the patch was approved, the FDA had received notices
that nonfatal blood clots from the patch were three
times that of the pill. The AP then examined what has
actually happened since the patch came on the market
and found that deaths also appear to be at least three
times as high.
According to their story, "if you are a women taking
the pill who doesn't smoke and is under 35, the chance
that you are going to have a blood clot that doesn't
kill you is between 1 and 3 in 10,000. Your risk of
dying from a blot clot while using the pill is about
1 in 200,000. By contrast, with the patch, the rate
of nonfatal blood clots was about 12 out of 10,000
users during clinical trials, while the rate of deaths
appears to be 3 out of 200,000. Clots usually form
in the legs, and become serious problems if they travel
to a women's heart, lungs or brain."
If a loved one died, or if you or a relative sustained
a deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE),
