Call the Police and an Ambulance
You should call the police to ensure everyone’s safety and so that they can prepare a police accident report. You should call an ambulance so that they can treat and transport anyone injured to a hospital.
Exchange Information
You should give the other driver and/or police the information on your driver’s license, registration, and insurance card. You should also obtain this same information from the other driver. Also, ask the driver who owns the car, as it may not be the driver. You should also write down the driver’s name, address, driver’s license number, date of birth, sex, State of license, and home and cell phone numbers.
Parties Injured
Write down the names, addresses, date of birth and sex of each person injured and a description of their injuries.
Witnesses
Write down the name, address and home and cell phone numbers of anyone who may have seen the accident.
Car Damage
Write down the manufacturer, model, year and license plate of the other vehicle, and indicate the areas where the car was damaged.
Photographs
Take photographs of your injuries and the damage caused to your vehicle.
Draw a Diagram
Make a diagram of various landmarks (like stores, benches, lampposts, signs, etc.) and indicate the direction and flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
Contact Your Insurance Broker or Agent
You should immediately contact your insurance broker or agent and notify them of your accident.
Get a Copy of the Police Report
You should get the name, telephone number and precinct number of the police officer who prepared the accident report. Contact the Police Department and get a copy of the report as soon as possible.
Be Careful What You Say
People talk too much when they are in an accident because they are nervous and often say things they wish they did not. Do not discuss fault or say anything that may be used against you by an insurance company in a lawsuit.
