published in 2003 by the
National Center For Statistics
and Analysis and sponsored
by the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration, 18%

were struck and killed, 781
of these accidents were the
result of a hit-and-run.
In 2005,
new laws were passed to help
protect New Yorkers against
hit and run drivers and drunk
drivers. The new hit and
run law not only increase
penalties for deadly drivers
who leave the scene of an
accident, but also eliminate
the need for prosecutors
to prove criminal negligence
in order to charge a drunken
driver with a felony.
